Camp Matoaka is seeking counselors. See the list on the left for more detail. You must be at least 19 years old or a freshman in college. Arts and Crafts

We are seeking fine arts majors to teach pottery, sculpting, drawing, painting (oils/acrylics), textiles, tye dye, jewelry and other art mediums in our 2,400 sq. ft Arts Center. Personal experience and knowledge in art mediums, as well as imagination and insight, are helpful.

Computer Staff

We are seeking Computer Instructors. Knowledge of Windows XP, MS Office, HTML, and photo-editing is a necessity. You should be familiar with a wide range of computer hardware and software applications. Equipment includes 20 PCs with digital photo imaging, multi-media capabilities, and internet access.

Dance Staff

Personal experience and the ability to demonstrate Modern, Jazz, Basic Ballet, Basic Tap, and Hip Hop is recommended. Knowledge of choreography is beneficial. Facilities include three 24′ x 32′ hardwood dance floors and 24′ mirrors with wooden ballet bars.

Drama Staff

We are seeking theater majors to run four camp productions and two talent shows and to assist with our dance shows. Experience in acting, directing, scenery, dance, make-up, and music is essential. Lighting techniques and sound equipment experience is an advantage. Facilities include professional theater lights, a 30′ x 20′ thrust stage, costume room and dimmer board, sound equipment and props, and a full video department to record all presentations.

Fishing Staff

We are seeking fishing instructors to teach fishing from the shore line docks, pontoon boat, and our own on-site stocked trout pond. Experience in rod and reel assembly, knot tying, fly fishing, and identifying types of fish is necessary. Facilities include beach area with storage area. Use of a 35hp outboard, a 25hp outboard and a 50hp, 24 ft. pontoon boat. CPR/First Aid certificate is advantageous.

Fitness Staff

The fitness program includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of instruction. The purpose of the program is to conduct fitness assessments and prescribe exercise programs, and to lead group exercise classes including circuits. The fitness program consists of circuit routines, aerobics, weight training, cross-training, etc.

Gymnastics Staff

Staff should have personal experience and advanced skills in floor exercise, balance beam, uneven bars, and vault. Facilities include a fully equipped 60′ x 112′ gymnasium. Competition apparatus consists of a regulation 40′ x 40′ spring-loaded floor, cabled uneven parallel bars, 2 padded beams (high and low), a vault with separate runway and three assorted springboards.

Landsports Staff

We are looking for recreation or physical education majors to teach various landsports (soccer, softball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, archery, volleyball, beach volleyball, and basketball). Coaching and refereeing abilities are necessary. Knowledge of team organization and tournament play is also helpful. Facilities include acres of athletic fields for soccer, softball, volleyball and kickball as well as an archery range and outdoor basketball court lit for night time play. We also have a new golf driving range and putting area, as our facilities are always improving.

Mountain Bike Staff

Instructors must know how to descend, climb, tackle obstacles, etc. Our program is made up of 12 specialized mountain bikes, Bell Helmets and miles of wooded trails. CPR\First Aid is preferable.


We are seeking recent graduates and professional licensed practical nurses or registered nurses to staff our health center located on the grounds of Camp Matoaka in Smithfield, Maine. Candidates should enjoy a casual environment that requires no uniforms, autonomy with a team approach, TLC for children away from home, ability to use creativity and experience in an innovative, rustic setting. Great organizational skills and a sense of humor is a must. Familiarity with ICD 9 codes and OSHA regulations are helpful. Camp Matoaka nursing responsibilities include: distribution of daily medications, assessment of camper and staff health needs, health and safety education, first aid application of the sick and injured, staff education and coordination of on-site doctor visits and off-site hospital ancillary services. General office duties, record keeping, and lifting may be required. Candidates must hold a current nursing license and apply for a Maine license. Job requirements include Basic American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and knowledge of word processing.

Photography Staff

We are seeking Photography or Art majors with advanced skills in photography. Knowledge of various types of SLR 35 mm cameras, digital photography and accessories with darkroom techniques for black and white developing and printing required. Facilities include a fully equipped darkroom with all accessories.

Piano & Music Staff

We are seeking a pianist with sight reading ability to accompany four camp theatrical productions. The ability to teach piano lessons as well as other instruments is desirable. Choral experience is advantageous.

Radio Instructors

Experience in on-air personality and programming is needed. Candidates should be able to schedule creative programming for children that challenges and teaches various communication skills. Technical knowledge of studio set up and maintenance is necessary as well. A FCC license is advantageous but not required. The broadcasting room provides an FM transmitter, stereo mixer board, turntables, microphones, CD players and associated equipment and materials. Music library includes a collection of records, cassettes and CDs.

Riding Staff

Riding instructors must have personal expertise and teaching in English Equitation skills at all levels – walk, trot, cantor, and fences. Included in instructional responsibilities is the care and maintenance of seven horses. Facilities include a seven-stall fully-equipped barn, together with two paddocks and bridal paths. CPR\First Aid certificate is preferable.

Ropes Staff

A high level of ability in project adventure, outward bound and prior experience in a Ropes Training Course is necessary. Strong leadership ability is desirable. Facilities include all high and low elements including a 25′ climbing wall, 40′ two-sided climbing tower as well as a 40′ pamper pole and zip line. CPR/First Aid certificate is advantageous.

Sewing Staff

Instructors will be teaching basic and intermediate sewing techniques (soft sculpture, pillows, simple skirts, and shorts) on machine, as well as hand stitching. Costume preparation for theater productions is a plus. Our facilities include twelve sewing machines set up in our 2400 sq. ft. Arts Center with all necessary materials and supplies.

Small Crafts Staff

Instructors should have experience and teaching ability in at least two of the following areas: sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and canoeing. Red Cross Basic Small Craft (sailing, canoeing or windsurfing) Instructors Certificate is desirable. Current CPR/First Aid certificate is required. Facilities include: 7 Aqua Finns, 2 Sunfish, 2 American sloops 14’6″, 9 aluminum canoes, 4 aluminum rowboats, 15 kayaks, 8 windsurfers, 6 paddle boats, Aqua Cat catamaran and two outboard motor patrol boats. We contribute towards enrollment in a certified Basic Small Craft Instructors Training program.

Swim Staff

Instructors must have a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors Certificate, CPR and First Aid certificates. Be able to teach all levels of swimming according to the Red Cross Standards and Skill sheets. Swim Team coaching is available. Facilities include a 25 meter, 4 lane, outdoor heated training pool complete with three 200′ water slides, as well as a 10,000 sq ft swim area located on East Lake.

Tennis Staff

Instructors should have tournament or competitive experience independently, or in school. Instructors must be able to demonstrate and teach all strokes, service and strategy, rules and scoring. Personal skill should be advanced. Prior instructing desirable. Knowledge of tournament organization is helpful. Tennis Team coaching is available. Facilities include nine two-color all weather courts, four of which are lit for night time play.

Trip Leaders

Program includes taking groups of campers on various day trips: sea kayaking, white water rafting, theatre performances, laser tag, indoor rock climbing and more. Level of ability includes making fires, nature knowledge and setting up tents. Ability to read and understand driving maps and current driver’s license is mandatory. Strong leadership and CPR/First Aid certificate is advantageous. You must be at least 21 years old.

Video Staff

Knowledge of equipment and techniques of broadcasting is necessary. Our facilities include a fully equipped video editing suite with top quality 1/2 inch SVHS recording and editing equipment as well as a Canon MiniDV camera and Avio non-linear editing system.

Waterski Staff

High level of ability in skiing, barefooting and motorboat driving is preferred. Knowledge of instruction is recommended. Strong swimming ability is desirable. Facilities include 5 Mastercraft pro-star ski boats with barefoot booms. Current CPR/First Aid certificates are required.
