Trip Day!

Most license plates in the state of Maine proudly bear the term “Vacationland”. The Maine Camp Experience website describes the reasoning behind that term as “Maine offers a unique natural setting that has been luring summer vacationers here for decades. Thanks to its vast, tranquil and temperate setting a visitor can find endless things to do and places to explore. From the pristine wilderness to pine forest mountain ranges to the crystal clear waterways and majestic shorelines, Maine represents the perfect setting for summer—one that can’t be matched anywhere.” At Camp Matoaka, we enjoy introducing our campers to some of Maine’s unique offerings by taking them off-camp on exciting field trips.

Yesterday, our campers in Bunks 8-11 travelled to the Popham Beach State Park to enjoy the sun, surf and sand. Campers built sand castles, swam in the ocean, collected shells and enjoyed a picnic lunch. It was a fantastic day for everyone! Even the local lifeguards and staff at the beach remarked that we were the “best camp” they’d worked with!

Our campers in Bunks 12-14 travelled to the largest city in Maine, Portland to take in a Portland Sea Dogs Baseball game! The girls loved the atmosphere, cheering on the home team and eating ice cream, hot dogs and pizza! They returned to camp decked out in fantastic souvenirs such as baseball caps, t-shirts and sweatshirts that they purchased! The Sea Dogs won their game, and the campers had a blast!

Meanwhile, our oldest campers, Bunk 15, travelled to the “Jewel of the Coast”, Camden, Maine. There they hiked to the summit of Mount Battie in the Camden Hills State Park. They were rewarded with a stunning vista at the top. Following the hike, they enjoyed an afternoon lunch and shopping in Downtown Camden. Returning to camp, they sang songs to the Office Staff thanking them for, what they claimed to be, “the BEST trip EVER!”

Maine is the perfect place to spend a summer, and Camp Matoaka is even better! Yesterday’s trips proved that the Matoaka Magic doesn’t end at the front gates, campers carry it with them wherever they may go, whether it’s the beach, the city or to the top of a mountain. The memories made here will surely last a lifetime.
