Posted June 15, 2013 • Share: One huge element of any Staff Orientation is helping a group of individuals develop a group identity and the ability to work as one. This is especially true of Summer Camp staff, but we put our own fun spin on things. College League is a summer-long competition that is vitally important to the Matoaka experience. Our girls cherish this tradition that has taken place every year of Matoaka’s existence- dating back to 1951 when it was called “College Comp”! In order for our staff to fully understand the elements of a true College League experience, we have our staff compete throughout Orientation in their own version of this treasured event. Our staff was divided into four teams, captains were named, they chose team names and colors, sticks lines were formed, and the competition began! Another activity designed to develop teamwork skills amongst our staff took place at our Ropes Course. Our fantastic Ropes staff led everyone else in a series of team-building activities. The highlight was definitely the balance game on our brand new “Whale Watch” element. This wooden platform balances on a center fulcrum, and a team of individuals work together to balance it perfectly while standing on it. It was fascinating to see the group dynamic at work Then, last night, the excitement continued off-camp to Sparetime in Waterville where everyone relaxed and enjoyed a fabulous night of bowling and karaoke! We brought the Matoaka Magic with us by declaring it an 80s themed night! Every one was dressed up for the theme and had fun with it. We also learned that we have, by far, the most vocally talented staff we’ve seen in YEARS! It sounded more like an episode of American Idol than your typical bowling alley karaoke! Needless to say, our staff is psyched and ready for the campers to arrive one week from tomorrow!
