Sportsmanship is Key!

Here at Matoaka, good sportsmanship is the essence of all activities. It’s an essential value of everything we teach here, whether it be soccer, sewing, or sailing. Teamwork and a positive attitude are a part of everything we do.

Yesterday, this value was evident throughout the camp, as well as off-camp. It was a busy day! Our girls participated in inter-camp competitions against Camp Laurel and Camp Vega in softball, basketball, and soccer. The girls played their hearts out and had fun, while their peers cheered them on! The under 10 basketball team lost to Vega 24-2, and their Laurel game got rained out. Our under 12 soccer game also lost, 3-1. For softball, we beat Laurel 7-6, but lost to Vega 4-5. Our under 15 soccer team lost 3-2.

Going along with the sportsmanship theme, our senior campers traveled off-camp to watch the Portland Sea Dogs baseball team play host to the Trenton Thunder. It was a fantastic night of baseball under the stars, where the girls cheered on the home team while enjoying the classic hot dogs, popcorn, and other fun foods.

Back at camp, it was an exciting day with our cheerleading class learning different lifts and tosses, and there’s no way they would’ve been successful without every girl participating and displaying teamwork. It was thrilling to watch!

Nearby, a group of junior campers performed a choreographed dance number to “Sail” by AWOLnation and mastered it on the first attempt thanks to the guidance of the fantastic Dance staff we have this year.

Then, during our second General Rec period, a group of campers teamed up to help out at the barn. One of our ponies had been painted the night before for Campfire, so we had a “Pony Washing Party!” Definitely a unique experience for everyone who participated!

For our evening activity, the junior and intermediate campers gathered in the Performing Arts Center for a talent show while the senior campers were away! It was a creative night of performances including dance numbers, vocal performances, and even a juggling/gymnastics routine!
