Sundays are a special day at Camp Matoaka, and today was no different! With a special breakfast of homemade muffins and the latest edition of our weekly newspaper “The Bunkline”, Sunday mornings are a special time.
At lunchtime many of our girls got to spend time with family members attending one of our brother camps. If our girls have a brother or cousin at Camp Manitou or Camp Caribou, this time is set aside for them to see each other. This week we hosted the Caribou boys here to have a pool party with their sisters or cousins. Simultaneously, several of our girls traveled over to Caribou for lunch with their family members there.
After lunch we held the most popular of all of our College League meets- the Apache Relay! This gigantic relay race involves every team member and winds its way across our camp several times! Campers run, canoe, swim, commando crawl and bike from station to station in hopes to lead their team to glory. This year’s race was extremely close with the lead changing hands multiple times throughout the 30 minute race.
Then we all enjoyed a lovely dinner of chicken patties and roasted hot dogs outside where the girls got to sit with their bunkmates. It was a warm summer night and everyone enjoyed themselves excitedly discussing the day’s events.
After dinner we gathered in the Council Ring for Campfire! This week’s theme was “Fairy Tales”. The girls were very imaginative with their costumes dressing as cartoon characters, fairies, and storytellers. Counselors from each department here presented campers awards for their fantastic achievements in activities this week. Also at Campfire, Chad announced the results of the Apache Relay. The Wesley Warriors placed 3rd, the Huston Hawks and Salem Stingrays tied for 2nd, and the Clayton Cobras finished first!
It’s hard to believe that next Sunday is already Visiting Day!!! Where has the summer gone?!
