We had our final staff arrivals yesterday, so the entire 2013 Camp Matoaka staff is finally united at One Great Place. We celebrated the official start of Orientation with a fun night of activities!
Our genius Events Director Molly “Pockets” put together a fantastic “Wild Wild West” themed dinner for everyone. It was a hilarious hoedown complete with line dancing and watermelon races and a feast of pulled pork, hamburgers, corn on the cob and freshly baked corn bread. Old-fashioned root beer floats were poured for dessert. Many of our international staff members were introduced to this American classic for the very first time! What a perfect introduction to both Camp Matoaka and the United States.
After that, we gathered in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) so that everyone could be officially introduced to the Office Staff and Department Heads. Of course everything “official” at camp must be done with an element of fun. So the leaders of camp performed a series of fun skits to welcome everyone. There was even a cameo appearance by cartoon classics Gumby and Pokey!
Next, everyone made their way to the Rec Hall for even more fun! A series of ice-breakers to help everyone get to know each other was a huge success. Everyone was laughing hysterically as people were sitting on each others’ laps, and then later sticking Life Saver candies to each others’ faces with water. Having silly and ridiculous fun is a major part of summer camp so this was the perfect introduction to Camp Matoaka for everyone involved.
Orientation allows people from all over the world to gather together and unite into the Matoaka family. In ten short days, we’ll welcome over 300 young girls into that family and kick-off our 63rd
year of Matoaka Magic.
