Dr. Michael Thompson
If you walk around any camp, you will see (campers) fascinated by their counselors because these young adults are both their caregivers and their developmental road map to the future.
-Dr Michael Thompson
Yesterday, we were honored to welcome renowned Child Psychologist and author Dr. Michael Thompson to Camp Matoaka. Dr. Thompson addressed our staff on two important topics relevant to kids at summer camp: friendship and independence.
The first workshop was entitled “Best Friends, Worst Enemies” and Dr. Thompson spoke in-depth about children’s friendships and how they are formed. Dr. Thompson engaged everyone and applied his findings to our real-life friendships and experiences. He went on to examine the unique qualities of summer camp friendships.
We took a lunch break then reconvened for a second workshop entitled “Homesick and Happy” in which Dr. Thompson examined the difference in a child’s accomplishments when they are achieved away from home. Summer camp provides a unique experience for children to test their own limits and boundaries without their parents’ guidance or support.
When the workshops ended, the entire audience immediately gave Dr. Thompson a standing ovation. His lectures were both enlightening and inspiring. Everyone in the theater left with a sense of fulfillment and pride in their choice to spend a summer helping children achieve greatness.
