A Whole New World!
I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
Those iconic lines from Disney’s classic musical “Aladdin” can evoke feelings from anyone who hears them. It’s clear that the characters are on a wondrous journey to face new experiences and adventures. The same can be said for a summer at Camp Matoaka, as our campers just had a magical weekend following their hearts.
Friday morning was our annual Matoaka Island Swim. Over 70 of our 12-15 year old campers have been waking up for early morning practices over the last few weeks to prepare for this 1.5 mile swim across East Pond. The water actually WAS “shining, shimmering, splendid” on this gorgeous morning swim. Campers swam in groups across the lake, well-supervised by lifeguards, nurses and staff on nearby boats. Every camper completed the swim successfully and it was a life experience that they will treasure forever, thanks to Camp Matoaka.
That evening, our oldest campers, The Queens, led the camp in our weekly Friday Night Services. These girls, nearing the end of their final summer as Matoaka campers, provided words of wisdom to the rest of camp about cherishing every moment here at Camp Matoaka and making the most of each moment of Matoaka Magic. These girls are less than a week away of entering “A Whole New World” as alumni of One Great Place. Sure, they’re sad to be saying good-bye to One Great Place, but they have a lifetime of new adventures ahead of them with “new horizons to pursue”, as the song states.
On Saturday night, our Theater Department shared their final musical of the summer season with us- “Aladdin”. As always, we were dazzled by the talent our campers and staff possess. We were enchanted to the magical land of Agrabah, and followed Aladdin and Jasmine on their story about following your heart and standing up for what is right. Everything was perfect, the lights, the costumes, the sets, the acting, the choreography and the vocals. We cannot thank our PAC staff enough for the fantastic job they did, as well as our incredibly talented campers.
